FAQ

WHAT IS
MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a popular skincare treatment that stimulates your body’s own ability to produce collagen by creating thousands of micro-channels in the skin. Why do we want to increase our collagen levels? Responsible for giving your face youthful bounce and plumpness, our collagen levels start to decline from our early 20’s, decreasing by about 1% per year, resulting in the formation of lines and wrinkles.

Not all microneedling devices are created equal and you should only expect the best device to be used on your skin.

Here at The Happy Glow, we use SkinPen, the first globally approved microneedling device with a C.E. mark and I.S.O. certification. SkinPen uses patented single use sterile needle cartridges and is surrounded in a custom-designed BioSheath that provides a barrier to prevent cross contamination between procedures.

HOW DOES
MICRONEEDLING WORK?

Each microneedling treatment follows a few simple steps:

  1. Thorough cleansing and preparation of your skin

  2. Application of topical anaesthetic (if requested)

  3. Application of a hydrogel to help the SkinPen glide smoothly across your skin

  4. Use of the SkinPen to create millions of microchannels to kickstart your body’s natural healing process and boost those all-important collagen levels.

After your treatment, you will have some redness (similar to sunburn) which should subside within 24-72 hours. You will be provided with an aftercare kit to take home which includes two products to help aid the healing process.

WHAT IS THE SKINPEN PROCESS?

The SkinPen treatment works in three simple steps, designed to activate the skin’s natural healing process. Following each session, the skin begins to heal itself, looking more renewed and rejuvenated over time.  SkinPen is only used in professional settings and delivers dramatic results without the use of heat or chemicals.

INFLAMMATION

SkinPen’s microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, triggering a natural immune response to disinfect, remove debris, increase blood flow, and activate the creation of new tissue.

PROLIFERATION

The micro-wounds created by SkinPen are rebuilt with new granulation cells that include collagen proteins. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.

REMODELLING

New dermal tissues form, rich in collagen and elastin proteins. These proteins improve skin quality, visibly reducing facial acne scars and neck wrinkles, leaving skin more smooth, radiant, and younger-looking.

MICRONEEDLING FAQ

  • SkinPen is a microneedling device. Not all microneedling devices are created equal and SkinPen is widely recognised as a top-tier treatment within the aesthetics industry.

SkinPen is only used in clinical settings, uses patented single use sterile needle cartridges and is surrounded in a custom-designed BioSheath that provides a barrier to prevent cross contamination between procedures.

  • Microneedling is a procedure that uses sterilised needles to create micro-channels in your skin. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy or skin remodelling.

The small wounds trigger the natural healing processes of the body to produce more collagen and elastin, which we lose as we age.

Collagen and elastin are key parts of the dermis layer which help skin stay plump and youthful.

  • Microneedling prices vary depending on the treatment area.

Our microneedling prices can be found under treatments.

  • Microneedling cannot be performed on those with active acne.

Microneedling is an effective treatment for acne scars, particularly depressed rather than raised scars due to the collagen production that microneedling causes in the treatment area. The increased collagen helps to smooth the scarred area out.

  • We recommend 3 to 6 sessions with a 4 week gap between each session. The number of sessions will depend on what is being treated (e.g. acne scars, stretch marks, etc…) and the size of the area being treated.

  • The SkinPen microneedling treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that the majority of people find very tolerable. Topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand to ensure your comfort throughout. Nerves and blood vessels are located in the subcutaneous and deeper layers of the skin, therefore they will not be affected by microneedling, which targets the epidermal/dermal layers.

The level of discomfort experienced will vary from person to person, but some find that the bony prominences of the face (jawline/forehead) are slightly more uncomfortable to be treated. We are able to adjust the depth of the microneedling if discomfort is experienced.

  • At home microneedling is usually carried out using a derma roller. A derma roller is a drum with fine needles attached to the surface. The drum is then connected to handle and you roll the device back and forth across the skin.

A derma roller and SkinPen are both microneedling devices, so what makes them different?

    SkinPen is more precise

SkinPen can easily treat hard to reach areas such as around the eyes, nose and upper lip which are difficult for derma rollers.

    SkinPen is adjustable

The needle depth can be adjusted between 0.25mm and 2.5mm according to the area of the body being treated. For example, the depth for the delicate orbital rim of the eye is much shallower than the neck or other parts of the face.

Derma rollers can’t vary their depth.

    SkinPen minimises recovery time

With SkinPen, the needles penetrate the skin vertically whereas derma roller needles penetrate the skin at an angle. This angle penetration is more likely to tear through the skin which take longer to heal and therefore a longer treatment recovery time.

    Hygiene

How clean is your derma roller? Trying at-home microneedling poses safety risks, such as infection.

SkinPen microneedling is carried out in a sanitary clinical environment with single-use needle cartridges and a custom-designed BioSheath that provides a barrier to prevent cross contamination between procedures.

    SkinPen is for professionals only

Your skincare practitioner must be an appropriately trained and insured professional in order to offer SkinPen. In-depth Microneedling training must be completed with demonstrated knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. This ensures that you and your skin are in safe hands when you get a microneedling treatment.

    Conclusion

A derma roller cannot treat the same range of skin concerns that SkinPen can. There are several risks associated with attempting this procedure yourself at home, so we advise booking in with a trained clinician for the best results.

  • SkinPen should not be used on patients who have active skin cancer in the treatment area(s); open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area(s); an allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics; a hemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction; are pregnant or nursing; or are currently taking drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin (such as Accutane).
