FAQ

WHAT IS
SKIN LESION REMOVAL?

Skin lesions are areas of the skin that look different to the surrounding skin, or are growing abnormally.

Most skin lesions are harmless. You may want to have one removed if you are catching it on clothes, jewellery or for aesthetic reasons.

There are a variety of treatments for removing skin lesions. We use CryoPen, an advanced cryotherapy tool that provides a fast, effective, permanent removal of benign skin lesions. Cryotherapy lesion removal is no longer available on the NHS.

Prior to any treatment, we will carry out an assessment of the proposed treatment area and advise on whether CryoPen is the best option for you.

HOW ARE SKIN LESIONS REMOVED?

CryoPen emits a pressurised and superfine jet of nitrous oxide. The nitrous oxide freezes the inter-cellular fluid within the lesion, breaking down the cell membranes and destroys unwanted tissue. The procedure is fast, highly effective and virtually painless, making it a popular choice among clients.

The CryoPen itself is extremely precise. It specifically targets the lesion, leaving the surrounding, healthy tissue untouched.

Treatment will vary based on the size and depth of the skin lesion but during each session, it follows 3 steps:

  1. Initial freezing cycle

  2. Briefly left to thaw for a few seconds

  3. Follow up freezing cycle

WHICH SKIN LESIONS CAN BE REMOVED?

CryoPen can safely remove:

  • Skin tags

  • Warts & Verrucae (viral lesions)

  • Milia

  • Cherry Angiomas

  • Sun / age / liver spots

  • Seborrheic Keratosis

  • Moles (benign)

Following treatment, it can take around 6 weeks for the treatment area to fully heal. The exact recovery time will depend on the depth and size of the lesion area.

WHAT IS THE LESION REMOVAL PROCESS?

We use a precision cryotherapy tool called CryoPen to remove skin lesions. It doesn’t require any anaesthesia, the treatment time is quick and there is minimal post treatment care.

1 PREPARATION

Once you book an appointment, you will receive guidance on which products/treatments to avoid before your treatment to ensure the best results.

Preparation is required before your treatment if it is a viral lesion, such as a wart or verruca.

2 TREATMENT

At your appointment, we will perform an analysis of the lesion and ensure that treatment is suitable.

We will prepare the area and preform an initial freeze of the treatment area, followed by a thaw period and then a second freeze.

3 POST CARE

After your treatment, the area will then turn red, a blister may form and a dark crust will form over the lesion. The crust will fall away over the next 7-14 days, revealing new skin.

You will be given an advice sheet on the post care you need to follow to ensure the best results.

4 FOLLOW UP

Approximately 4 weeks after your treatment, there will be a follow up appointment to review the treatment site and determine if any further freezing is required.

Up to 2 follow up appointments are included in the initial consultation price.

SKIN LESION FAQ

  • The removal of benign skin lesions (i.e. non-cancerous) are classed as cosmetic, and are no longer offered on the NHS.

If you are concerned that a lesion could be cancerous, please visit your GP for advice.

  • Lesion removal prices vary depending on the type of lesion being removed and the number of lesions.

Our lesion removal prices can be found under treatments.

  • The number of treatments required will depend on the surface area and thickness of the unwanted lesion.

In most cases, at least two freezing cycles will be necessary to get the best results, and our treatment costs includes up to 3 treatments on the same lesion.

Repeat cycles are much more likely to be needed in viral lesions such as warts and verruca’s.

  • The majority of people find the CryoPen treatment virtually pain-free, although of course everyone has a different perception of pain.

During treatment, you may feel a slight stinging sensation similar to a ballpoint pen being pushed into the skin. This minor stinging may persist for a few minutes after treatment and on occasion, a blister may form. This isn’t a cause for concern.

  • Generally speaking, the procedure is suitable for the majority of clients. During your consultation, we will carry out a thorough analysis of the lesion which will allow us to ascertain your suitability. If we will don’t think that CryoPen is the best option for you, we’ll let you know.

Please be aware that CryoPen treatment isn’t suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also contraindicated in clients with auto-immune disorders, or those who suffer from keloid scarring.

  • Scarring is rarely seen, however there may be some temporary darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) and lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation) after treatment.

In some cases you could have a faint mark or a flat white scar once the region has healed.

  • The treatment is safe but there is a greater chance that you will see pigmentation changes making the skin lighter at the treatment site.

This is due to the treatment killing melanocytes in the treatment area. These cells produce melanin which give skin its colour.
